Oxidative stress is a very important aging factor, and the CIME Clinic Health Coaching team wants to explain it to you in a very simple way so that you can understand it.
Oxidative stress is the imbalance in our cells due to an increase in free radicals and/or a decrease in antioxidants. This can eventually disable the ability of the biological system to detoxify it and can damage our tissues.
Recall some concepts such as the generation of free radicals, which is a normal physiological process that takes place in the body as a result of the cellular metabolism reactions necessary for its functioning. But there are a number of agents (UV radiation, pollution, etc.) that cause an increase in the production of free radicals.
We must understand what are the common sources that generate this imbalance:
- Sources of free radicals: cigarette smoke, air pollution, radiation, UV light (such as sunlight), excessive consumption of alcohol and/or drugs.
- Antioxidant sources: dark chocolate, tea, and coffee, fruits, and vegetables, nuts, condiments such as cinnamon and oregano, beans.
Oxidative stress has been linked to several diseases, such as some types of cancer, cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, eye diseases, lupus, and other medical conditions. Many of these diseases may have been prevented with an appropriate balance between oxidative stress and antioxidant levels.
The recommendations that we must follow to reduce oxidative stress are:
- Eat healthy foods rich in antioxidants (fruits and vegetables).
- Exercise regularly to increase your antioxidant defenses, walk daily for at least an hour.
- Avoid exposure to cigarette smoke and other environmental pollutants.
